Auckland awesome in rout of Bay

PA Wellington The defending champions Auckland opened the Challenge Shield series of the Post Office Savings Bank national men’s hockey tournament in Wellington yesterday with a 10-1 win over Hawke’s Bay.

Wellington was also convincing in a 5-1 win over Wairarapa in the same series. The former international, Arthur Parkin, scored a hat-trick of goals for Auckland and Peter Daji notched two as the

side built on their early superiority. They went ahead 1-0 with a penalty stroke after only 38 seconds and shot to a 4-1 interval lead. Hawke’s Bay made it 11 after five minutes but from there Auckland took over and were ahead 6-1 before they made substitutions to have their top selection on the field.

Mark and Peter Tynan scored thrice for Canterbury in its 5-1 win over Hamilton and Northland finished much the stronger to beat' Manmawatu 1-0.
