Sydney league tie
Balmain and North Sydney will meet this evening to decide which fills the vital fifth position in the Sydney rugby league play-offs, which start next week-end. A three-way tie was averted when the lowly Canberra held St George to an 18-18 draw at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Captained by Mark Graham, Norths had a 17-10 away win over CronullaSutherland to finish level with Balmain, which had beaten South Sydney, 38-20, the previous day.
That result cost Souths the minor premiership. It went into the last round leading by
one competition point, only to be overtaken when Parramatta was a 22-6 winner over Manly-Warringah before a Brookvale Oval record attendance of 26,655. In the other match Eastern Suburbs headed off Western Suburbs, 8-6. CanterburyBankstown and Iliawarra played the Monday evening match, and Penrith had a bye. Final premiership points: Parramatta 37, Souths 36, Canterbury 33, Manly 33, Balmain 30, Norths 30, St George 29, Penrith 27, Easts 24, Cronulla 23, Canberra 21, Wests 21, Iliawarra 18.
