Defence

Sir,—The Prime Minister has attacked his Ministry of Defence, publicly, over present policy (surely approved by Cabinet?) on the employment of servicewomen. Clearly the naval, army and air force chiefs are now free to “go public” themselves on matters in which they disagree with the Government. It seems a pity as the traditional loyalty was part of the democratic system, and worth preserving. But now that Mr Lange has changed the rules, will the service chiefs tell us, please, what they really think about this Government “blundering out of A.N.Z.U.5.,” to quote the title of those prophetic editorials of some time ago?— Yours, etc., C. R. VENNELL. August 29, 1986.
