Court report
Sir,—After reading the remarks of a judge (August 29) it is little wonder there is so much violence in the community. The judge was not satisfied that it had been proved that the defendant, in punching and kicking, intended to cause injury. The defendant kicked a man twice “in the guts” and once in the head. He had then kicked the man in the face while the man was on the ground. “The judge held that these were the correct accounts of the defendant’s involvement,” according to the report. Why then does one kick and punch a person if it is not to injure? It is certainly an invitation to thugs and bullies to show less respect for behavioural standards than they do at present. — Yours, etc., J. SMITH. August 29, 1986.
