Air New Zealand

Sir,—Richard Prebble is reported (August 28) as saying that the Government hoped Air New Zealand would become as efficient domestically as it is internationally. Readers may be interested to know that “Flight International,” one of the world’s most authoritative aviation journals, published an exhaustive analysis of airline efficiency in its issue of November 2, 1985. Of the 14 major airlines studied it rated Air New Zealand fourth, best of the non-United States carriers (whose economies of scale are great) and ahead of such well-regarded airlines as Lufthansa, S.A.S., Air Canada, Japan Airlines, British Caledonian and British Airways. This is on efficiency of domestic and international operations, the whole airline. Would that the Government was as efficient. Mr Prebble has compared airlines with supermarkets, Mr Mike Moore with hotels. They put a lot of effort into confusing the issue.—Yours, etc.,

D. MCDONNELL. August 29, 1986.
