Stock losses
Sir,—As an Australian visitor to your beautiful country, I was extremely upset to witness and read of the terrible lamb and sheep losses recently. Surely something can be done to prevent such losses jn the future — even last year’s figure of 40,000 in the Canterbury area seems unacceptable to me. Is it not possible to provide some wetweather protection and windbreaks, even in the form of trees and bushes if other types of shelter are too expensive; or why not lamb in September. In Australia we have a very stylish blue raincoat for recently shorn sheep in cold areas. It pays for itself in prevention of deaths due to exposure. I do appreciate how hard working your fanners are, and unable to afford such losses in the present economic climate. — Yours, etc., J. S. BAILEY. Greenlands, N.S.W., August 29, 1986.
