Balkans shaken
NZPA-Reuter Belgrade Masonry fell to the streets in the Rumanian capital, Bucharest, and people fled their homes in panic around the Balkans yesterday after a strong earthquake in southern Rumania. An Rumanian official said the shock had registered 6.5 on the Richter scale.
It said the ’quake struck at 11.28 p.m. (9.28 a.m. New Zealand time, Sunday) with its epicentre 180 km north of Bucharest, in the Vranca mountain region, near the cities of Ploesti and Buzau. A Western diplomat in Bucharest said the tremors had caused pandemonium in the city. “There was panic on the streets. Some masonry fell down from buildings. Embassy buildings were cracked.”
