Submarine mishap
PA Auckland Trials of a raini-sub-marine went astray in the Hauraki Gulf last week, according to a Ministry of Defence spokesman. The Canadian-made Manta Cruise-Mercible, which is used mainly for taking pictures of the sea bed for mapping, plunged 55 metres when a cable attaching it to the
research vessel Tui broke. Next day. Navy divers were called to retrieve the submarine, said the spokesman. Trials were delayed a further iy 2 days while batteries in the submarine were recharged. The spokesman said he knew of no plans by the Ministry to buy the $1 million submarine.
