Two drown, one missing

PA Wellington Two people drowned and a third is missing after being swept out to sea in tragedies at three separate North Island beaches yesterday. A girl, aged five, drowned at Napier, a man drowned at Kawhia Beach, near Te Awamutu, and a youth is missing, feared drowned at Auckland’s Piha Beach.

The man who drowned off Kawhia Beach was swimming to shore with two other men after their boat sank. The Te Awamutu police have not yet released the name of the dead man. All three men were

wearing life-jackets but on the swim to shore, less than one kilometre away, one swimmer disappeared. His body was later recovered.

A girl, aged five, drowned and three people were taken to Napier Hospital after a wave swept two children off a beach north of Napier. The Napier police said the girl and a young cousin were playing on the sand at Whirinaki, 14km north of Napier, when the wave struck about 3 p.m.

The girl’s father and uncle went into the surf and rescued one of the children. The dead girl

was found on the beach about an hour later. The two adults and surviving child were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of the cold water, the police said.

Whirinaki had a bad undertow and was experiencing big surf, the police said.

Names were not available, as next of kin had yet to be informed.

Fears were held last evening for the safety of a youth aged 15, swept out to sea on Saturday off the west coast beach of Piha.

The police said that the youth, Paul Graham Shortland, of New Lynn, had been walking with two friends on Lion Rock about 3 p.m.
