Third seed walks away from match

PA Wellington North Shore’s Malcolm Temperley caused a stir at the New Zealand Countrywide table tennis championships yesterday afternoon when he walked off the floor in a match against the unseeded Geoff Rau, of Counties. Temperley, the No. 3 seed for the individual title, was behind, 17-21, 17-21, 17-12, when he departed the scene. Afterwards he said the reason for his action was an attitude problem he had had for about six months and consequently his concentration had slipped. Temperley actually had two falls nearing the final stages of the third game, suffering slight injuries to his right leg. He said that the injuries had nothing to dp with his defection. It was the first time he had ever acted in that manner in 12 New Zealand championships, he said. In the senior mixed doubles there was an upset when a Canterbury junior, Karl Entwistle, and Lynley

Barker (Hawke’s Bay) defeated the No. 6 seeds, Tony Radfor (North Shore) and

Eileen Hoete (Auckland), 2826, 21-19. Then Entwistle and Barker defeated Patrick Low and Sally Hirst (Hutt Valley) 28-26. 21-19, .to reach the quarter-finals. Entwistle had to make a South Island connection and, to the disappointment of tits partner, a default was recorded allowing Barry Griffiths (Counties) and Sarah Sandley (North Shore), into the semi-finals. j .nav A 48-year-old South Australian, Eugene Herman, caused two upsets in the men’s open singles. In his first match he defeated David Chow (Hutt Valley), who had recorded some amazing results in the men’s inter-association teams matches, 21-12, 21-0, 21-12, and then Herman beat the talented Hamilton player, Murray Finch, in a gruelling five games, 21-14, 19-21, 1721, 24-22, 21-16.

In his next match Herman met the New Zealand champion and No. 1 seed, Barry Griffiths (Auckland), and gave the champion a hard match before he ran out of steam losing 21-17, 15-21, 2117, 13-21, 5-21.
