Record time by pursuit team

By

TOM BRIDGMAN

NZPA staff correspondent Washington New Zealand’s 4000 metre pursuit team set a national fastest time but still failed to qualify for the quarter-finals at the world cycling championships in Colorado Springs. The team’s manager, Bruce Dawe, said the pursuit team was timed at 4min 23.655, the fastest ride by a New Zealand four by over five seconds. “We are really pleased with the team and to have qualified would have been

great,” he said. “However, they just missed on qualifying by 1.2 seconds.”

The time by the New Zealand four — Andrew Whitford, Russell Clune, Craig Griffin and Gary Anderson — meant they were eleventh fastest over all.

The quickest time was Czechoslovakia in 4:17.71 while the final team to make the eight qualifiers, France, was timed at 4:22.41.

Mr Dawe said the Australian pursuit riders also failed to qualify.
