Canoeists win 500m race

By TOM BRIDGMAN NZPA staff correspondent Washington The New Zealand men’s k 4 500 metre crew easily won its race at a Commonwealth canoe regatta in Ottawa yesterday. The event was on the second and final day of a relaxed competition that followed the world canoe championships in Montreal. i The coach, Blair Campbell, said that in other races lan Ferguson finished second in the kl 500 m and Ed Richards

third. The race was won by England’s Jeremy West, who won the gold medal in the event at the world championships. In the k2 500 m Allan Thompson and Grant Bramwell were fifth. The women’s kl 500 m was won by a Canadian, Nancy Homestead, with the New Zealanders, Liz Blencowe second and Julie Gimblett fifth. In the women’s k2 500 m Blencowe and Gimblett were second while Kath Tracey and Denise Higgison were fourth.
