John McEnroe fined
NZPA-Reuter New York John McEnroe, who on Saturday defaulted out of the U.S. Open doubles tournament for showing up late for a match, was fined SUS4OOO yesterday for verbal abuse of officials who handed down the decision. McEnroe and his fellow American doubles partner, Peter Fleming, were fined SUSIOOO each for defaulting their match, and the fourtime men’s champion has already been knocked off in the first round of singles competition.
McEnroe and Fleming arrived six minutes past the 15minute grace period allowed for the start of their firstround match against two
South Africans, Christo Steyn and Danie Visser.
The American duo, threetime winners of the Open doubles crown, said they had been caught in traffic on their way to the National Tennis Centre.
