Christchurch Brother United’s players had a readymade incentive to give a top performance in its Rothmans Soccer League match against N.Z. Permanent Gisborne yesterday. The New Zealand team to play Australia was named on Friday and contained no members of the Christchurch team, although one, Ceri Evans, withdrew for business reasons. The New Zealand coach, Kevin Fallon, is also the Gisborne coach. United turned on a fine performance to beat Gisborne, 3-0, but its coach, lan Marshall, said he made no special point about the national squad in preparing his team for the match.
"They (the players) read it. I didn’t have to tell them. But
it’s no easy job picking a New Zealand team. I’m not going to criticise him,” said Mr Marshall.
A goal in the last minute by the veteran midfielder, Dave Taylor, enabled Masport Mount Wellington to share the points in the top-of-the-table match against the leader, National Mutual Miramar, yesterday. The 2-2 scoreline was ideal for United, which will win the league if it wins its last three games.
In other games, DB Wellington's slim title hopes were extinguished in Auckland; McKee Nelson United had its first away win of the season to move off the bottom of the table, with Paul Rosser, of University Cowan, being sent off for elbowing an opponent;
and another three players had an early shower in a bitter south Auckland derby. Results:
Christchurch Brother United 3 (John Hanson 2, Brent Berry), NZ Permanent Gisborne 0. Half-time 1-0.
Child Freighters United 2 (Reg Robinson, Jeremy Cutler), Wickliffe Press Dunedin City 2 (Mark Weddle penalty, Michael McGarry). Half-time 2-0. National Mutual Miramar 2 (Stuart Jacobs, Phil Alexander), Masport Mount Wellington 2 (Grant Lightbown, Dave Taylor). Half-time 2-1.
Hanimex-North Shore 4 (Kevin Hagan 2 including penalty, Duncan Cole, Allan Boath), DB Wellington 1 (Neal Cave). Half-time 2-1.
Landbase Papatoetoe 3 (Reece Culpitt, Bill McClure, Tony Levy), Majic Carpet Manurewa 1 (own goal). Halftime, 1-1.
University Cowan 2 (Siggy Kerbers, Alister Elder), McKee Nelson United 4 (Colin Tuaa 2, Simon Dwyer, Peter Simonsen penalty). Half-time 1-1. ROTHMANS LEAGUE
