Islanders grip on ice hockey firms
Islanders strengthened its grip on the senior ice hockey competition when it beat Rangers, 7-5, at the Big Apple on Friday.
• In the other senior match on Saturday, the bottom-placed AWA Hitachi Redwings beat Bruins, 4-2. Paul Scott, with three goals, led the scoring for Islanders and Steve Fahey scored four of the five goals for Rangers. Islanders led 3-0 at the end of the first period, but was held scoreless in the second while Rangers managed two. Goals came readily in the final period, Islanders scoring four of the seven to win, 7-5.

Redwings and Bruins were tied at 2-2 late in the first period before Doug Williamson scored his second goal to give Redwings the lead, 3-2, starting the second period. Redwings scored the only goal of that period and, although both teams had many scoring chances in the third, the goalkeepers, Frank Banwell and Chris Jones, blocked all scoring attempts.
