NZPA-AAP Sydney New Zealand’s Steve Renwick has won the vacant Australian and Australasian junior middleweight boxing titles in a split decision over Australia’s Paul Toweel. — Renwick, New Zealand’s junior middleweight champion who now lives in Sydney, edged out Toweel In a tough 12-round encounter in front .of a capacity crowd at the Cronulla Workers’ Club on ►'Friday evening. : For Toweel — the nephew „of a former world banchampion, Vic Toweel, who lost his title to .another Australian, Jimmy -Carruthers — it was his first loss in 23 professional fights. The judges scored the fight ,to Renwick, 116-114, 113-118, ►>llB-116, in an exciting battle which saw no knockdowns as both fighters easily lasted the distance. —Renwick in his twentyfourth professional fight had in at 69.6 kg, slightly slighter than Toweel who ‘tipped the scales at 69.652 kg. " Toweel will now travel to •Fiji to defend his South Pacific middleweight title against ■Sakariai Ve on Saturday. » The Australian junior 'middleweight title became 'Vacant when the holder, Ken ‘Salisbury, was injured in a car accident and ordered not to fight again by doctors.
