Superannuation

Sir, —Both National and Labour appear to address superannuation as a single issue instead of marrying it to the unemployment problem; both are a major expense. Surely sense should dictate reducing retirement age to 55, making retirement compulsory at 60, heavily taxing part-time earnings after retirement, say 80c in the dollar. This, together with the reintroduction of C.M.T., should see the end of unemployment benefits. Future employment problems can be addressed by adjusting the retirement age. Today we are throwing school-leavers on the scrap heap of unemployment, eventually to become unemployable. Far better to move to the other end of life and give a deserved rest to those who have already contributed to the country’s economy. — Yours, etc.,
