Democratic Party
Sir,—ln your editorial of August 26 you suggest that the Democratic Party will not win any seats in the next election. Why is it then that, although the National Party does not consider •that it can win Wanganui, the Labour Party has expressed fears that it might lose Wanganui? It is obvious that Labour is afraid 'that the Democrats (who came second there last time) will win that seat. It must also be remembered that although Neil Morrison is not as widely known as some politicians he has shown an ability to produce rapid increases iri support for his party in his own electorate. In 1978 he only got 2900 votes in Pakuranga, but by 1981 he had increased that to 9100 votes — an increase of 6200, which is a phenomenal achievement. Before the last election the political reporter of “The Press” did not expect him to get even 20 per cent of the ■vote in Pakuranga, but he won the seat. I think he is being underestimated again. — Yours, etc.,
J. C. RING. August 26, 1986.
