Shop quickly transformed

The Christchurch designer, George Chimirri, was given just three weeks to transform a Hereford Street shop into the elegant salon envisaged by Maryiln Cooper for her designer clothing shop, The Clothes Horse. Plans were decided on in three days, and orders sent throughout the world for materials.

George Chimirri, who designed the smaller, now vacant, Clothes Horse shop further east on Here-

ford Street, decided to continue with the whitetiled theme but to give the new shop a; more international feeling. With its high-vaulted ceiling and 'feature windows, the former Judith Malcolm shop was an ideal interior for transformation. Italian marble was laid on the floor, interspersed with Japanese mirror tiles, and 200 m of Swiss cotton batiste was hung as a theatrical curtain over the dressing rooms.

The Customwood walls were given trompe I’oeil treatment as marbleised painted panels. A hitch in the application meant that hasty telephone calls to New York were needed to make sure the walls were ready on time. Lighting, avoiding spotlights, is economical with the use of Italian fluorescents. Now only a few items of furniture are awaited to complete the speedy transformation.
