George Nepia honoured
PA Gisborne A former All Black fullback, Bob Scott, paid a final tribute yesterday to his friend and rugby legend, George Nepia. Mr Scott was one of a number of All Black greats who paid their last respects to Mr Nepia, who died in his sleep on Wednesday night and was buried at Rangitukia yesterday. Famous footballers who attended the funeral in-
eluded Richard (Tiny) White, Doc Paewai, Waka Nathan, Pat Walsh and Albie Pryor. Mr Scott spoke briefly on. the Hinepare marae, which was crowded with about 500 mourners, most of them being Mr Nepia’s fellow East Coasters.
The official representative of the Rugby Football Union, Mr Ivan Vodanovich, said a great kauri tree had fallen in the wor® of rugby players. He said Mr Nepia made
a great contribution to Maori rugby and he thanked him for what he did for the game. From the marae, where Mr Nepia lay in state since Wednesday, it was a short walk across the road to the church where the funeral service was conducted by Canon Hone Kaa, of Auckland, ' the Rev. John Tamihore and the Rev. Gordon Kaa.
Mr Nepia was buried beside his fwife, Huinga.
