F.O.L. report for Kawerau

,PA Wellington The locked-out Kawerau pulp and paper workers will meet on Thursday to hear a report from the Federation of Labour president Mr Jim Knox on their dispute with the Tasman Pulp and Paper Company. The decision to hold a meeting next Thursday was made by the union’s

executive yesterday after an unsuccessful meeting with the mill’s management in Wellington on Thursday. The mill’s operations director, Mr Graham Ogilvie, yesterday responded to news of the Thursday meeting with alarm and said the Pulp and Paper Workers’ Federation should meet much sooner.

The issues were simple enough for the union to meet immediately, he said. The acting union secretary, Mr Harold Appleton said Thursday was the first possible time Mr Knox could be in Kawerau, because of other commitments. Mr Ogilvie questioned

the value of national union officials participating because any assurances they could give would not convince the company’s clients. About 800 workers in other site unions are expected to be laid off by the company on Wednesday, 46 days after the dispute began.
