Deaf mute was punched, kicked
A man who punched and kicked a deaf-mute youth in Cathedral Square on July 25 was convicted on a charge of assaulting the youth with intent to injure him. The defendant, Asalele Simaile, aged 21, unemployed, admitted the offence, and was remanded on bail to September 12 for sentence, by Judge Laing.
The defendant used an interpreter to translate the charge and comments by the Judge. He was represented by Mr A. N. D. Garrett.
Sergeant W. P. Creasey said the offence occurred while Simaile was sitting
in the Square. The complainant walked across the Square and Simaile spoke to him.
The complainant shrugged his shoulders and moved off, and Simaile punched him in the face and then kicked him before walking away, leaving him lying on the ground.
Mr Garrett said Simaile had spent the day drinking and had smoked cannabis, and had very little recollection of the incident.
He had been placed in a detoxification cell at the police station after his arrest.
