Remit on solvents fails
Details of social welfare policy did not hold much interest at the conference, with fewer than half the delegates in the meeting chamber and lacklustre voting on most of the remits.
The exception was a remit — “that legislation be introduced urgently to control the sale of harmful solvents to young persons under the age of 18 years.” Strong support for action on solvent abuse was not matched by uniformity on how to do it. The remit, in fact, sought the
same as legislation now before Parliament introduced by the National Party and opposed by the Government. , A strong speech opposing the remit from the Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs Hercus, on the grounds that it would “criminalise young people” was enough to get it defeated handsomely. Remits calling for universal food subsidies and telephone rebates for the elderly were also defeated. The conference supported social welfare policies for those in need.
