AUSTRALIA Markets close higher

NZPA-AAP Sydney Continuing bullish sentiment for quality industrial equities saw Australian sharemarkets close higher. Trading was brisk with selective interest highlighting insurance, banking and mining sectors, brokers said. Brokers said trading was also buoyed by a number of healthy profit announcements which boosted investor confidence and instilled a sense of direction into the market. “The extent of support for industrials stocks was surprising," one broker said. “We are getting people back on take-over speculation with the easing of foreign investment guidelines.” Mercantile Mutual was among the major improvers, rising 150 c to 950 for a twoday improvement of 200 c. Ten cent rises took FAI to 710 and Edward Lumley to 730. The ANZ led the banks

with a 7c rise to 495. The Advance Bank was 5c firmer at 265, while the National Australia was steady on 534, and Westpac eased 2 to 460. Elsewhere, Bond Corp closed 8c lower at 327 after peaking at 350 in early trading following its 390 per cent rise in profit. Peko-Wallsend, which has posted a 100 per cent, profit increase closed 10c higher on 570. Elsewhere, BHP rose 2 to 786 in thin turnover, Adsteam was 20 up on 1180, while Bell Resources fell 5 to 495 and Elders IXL lost 10 to 485. Bell Group was steady on 1060. Soaring world precious metal prices brought local producers into demand with gold miner GMK up 20 to 1120, Kidston 10 to 680 and Placer Pacific 6 to 209, on a turnover of nearly 2 million shares. CRA was up 4 to 600 and platinum miner Helix rose 10 to 140, while Western Mining remained steady on 343.
