School Certificate
Sir, —You report (August 28) that a chief examiner in the Education Department wants teachers to discourage actively some pupils from sitting School Certificate English. It is well known that the Education Department massages the exam results. The present operation, removing some of the low-end marks, is a blatant attempt to pre-massage the results to the detriment of those who resist the call to drop out. Further, by reducing the failures, a falsely optimistic picture of the success of instruction in English may be achieved. The credibility of the Education Department in the matter of examinations is small enough as it is; now the chief examiner’s staff seem to want to reduce it even further.—Yours, etc. JOHN BENSON. Petone, August 28, 1986.
