Psychologists ‘have important role in sport’

PA< New Zealand trails the rest of the world in accepting the role of psychologists in sport and recreation, says a Christchurch clinical psychologist, Mr Graeme Clarke. Psychologists had an important role in promoting interest in sport in children, Mr Clarke said in Dunedin at the Psychological Society’s conference.

“The main thing is helping them develop a positive attitude towards sport so that they enjoy it,” he said.

With unemployment it was important to help people make the most of their leisure time. Top athletes in New Zealand also deserved psychological support, Mr Clarke said. He believed psychologists should be attached to sporting bodies or sports teams. At the last Olympics, the United States team had II psychologists. ’• “There is intense pressure on athletes to perform. Psychologists can offer a number of techniques to help them maintain their optimum levels,” he said.
