Black poverty still high
NZPA-Reuter Washington The poverty rate for black Americans decreased in 1985 as black incomes rose but was still three times the poverty rate for whites, the U.S. government reports. The Commerce Department’s Census Bureau showed that the poverty rate for blacks fell to 31.3 per cent from 33.8 per cent in 198’4. The rate for the general population was 14.0 per cent, about the same as in 1984 but up one point from the 1980 level when Ronald Reagan was first elected to the White Bouse. The number of blacks n the United States below he poverty level fell 6 )er cent to 8.9 million in I9Bpj, the bureau said.
