Japanese aid for Kiribati

special correspondent Suva Japan and Kiribati have confirmed Japanese aid of SFI.S million ($2.62 million) for the second stage of the Betio-Bairiki causeway and fisheries channel project, the Japanese Embassy in Suva said. The agreement was signed by the Kiribati Minister for Communications, Mr Taomati luta, and the Japanese Ambassador, Mr Kikuo Yoshida. The grant' will be used for the final works of the project, such as the pavement of a 4200-metre causeway between Betio Island, the commercial centre, and Bairiki Island, the administrative centre in Tarawa; to ease access and communications, and to buy and install navigation markers for the fisheries channel.
