Black Arrow well-placed to win at Ashburton

By

ALEX McMILLAN

Black Arrow, a courageous last start third in the A.I.C. International Winter Cup at Riccarton earlier this month, appears well-placed to win the 1600 m Star Time Caterers Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the first day of the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting at Ashburton tomorrow.

The five-year-old son of Licorice Stick has proved expensive to his supporters in the last 12 months, a win dividend last being paid out on the entire when he was promoted from second to first in the Selwyn Handicap at Riccarton during last year’s Grand National carnival. Black Arrow, himself, was on the “receiving end” of a judicial decision at Riccarton five weeks ago, when, after winning the S9OOO Ashley Meats Brabazon Handicap, he was relegated to fifth for causing minor interference. His subsequent reinstatement to first place after an appeal by his

connections would have, done anything but satisfy punters, who are likely to install him as a firm favourite tomorrow. Black Arrow, which has been in the care of the Riccarton trainer, Garth Jackson, in recent months after winning five races from the stable of Ron McCann and Pam Robson, was a shade unlucky in the Winter Cup, being brought wide on the home turn by Grant Davison before reaching the front rather too early in the straight. He was less than three lengths from the winner, Kar Dan, at the finish and with better luck in the running should prove too strong to-

morrow. Blyme, a solid fifth in the Winter Cup, and Apprize, sixth in the same race before winning narrowly but well at Oamaru last week, loom as the obvious threats to the likely favourite, although bold runs from Graikos and Black Arrow’s stablemate, Samasaan, would not surprise. The Mean Machine, a stylish winner over 1400 m at Oamaru last week, will be expected to repeat the performance in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the White Robe Lodge Stud Handicap, epecially with the benefit of a 4.5 kg apprentice allowance.
