Dept doubtful on ‘gay’ policy

The Education Department may not be able to adopt some parts of the Post-Primary Teachers’ Association policy on homosexual and lesbian teachers, says the department’s director of personnel, Mr Terry O’Brien. Mr O’Brien said that some of the regulations referred to in the new policy applied to the entire State service. “If there was a major change, it would have to happen across the entire State service,” Mr O’Brien said. Changes might occur, but they might not be brought about by the department. The regulations did not

consciously discriminate against homosexuals and lesbians, Mr O’Brien said. However, some regulations applied only to married couples, and did not include unmarried people, regardless of their sexuality. The Director of Schools, Mr Arch Gilchrist, said the department did not have resource material on homosexuality. However, the subject could easily arise in literature or history. "How the school deals with that is really the responsibility of ” the school,” he said.
