Killing quotas
Sir,—The Commerce Act, 1986, imposes massive penalties against businesses which dare to confer on prices on the assumption that they are forming price rings to “substantially lessen competition.” Your paper printed a report (August 26) of the decision of the Canterbury, West Coast, Nelson and Marlborough branch of the Meat Workers’ Union which restricted killing quotas after discussions with the Otago-Southland branch of the union. I wonder what penalties the Government will impose for this act of “substantially lessening competition.” — Yours, etc., B. A. MURRAY. August 26, 1986.
