Anzon into building materials industry
Anzon Investments, Ltd, has announced a major move into the building materials industry with the purchase of Manukau Timber Company, Ltd. The private company has been acquired for an undisclosed cash sum in what Mr J. S. Taylor, executive director of Anzon, described as a “sound strategic move.” Mr Taylor said Manukau Timber was very well positioned in its field and highly respected throughout New Zealand as a supplier of building materials.
He saw the purchase as an opportunity to widen Anzon’s activities in line with its policy of acquiring and giving management and financial support to successful com-
panies with growth potential.
Manukau Timber owns sawmills at Mamaku and Whangarei, Mitre 10 home centres at Pakuranga and Henderson, and three plants producing aluminium joinery for domestic and commercial buildings. Other products include processed and pre-cut timber and trusses and wooden packaging such as pallets, boxes and crates. It employs 250 people.
The company was founded in 1934 by the late Mr Gordon Pollard, and has grown to become one of the largest priv-ately-owned companies in the industry. Mr Taylor said there would be no staff or management changes, and An-
zon intended to preserve the Manukau Timber identity.
He added that the company’s assets acquired by Anzon included a valuable building site at Penrose. This would be developed by Anzon Properties, Ltd, into an industrial village, comprising 200,000 sq ft of warehouse, showroom, and office buildings.
