Chch firm’s, comet site wins award

A Christchurch company, Tourplan Pacific, has won an Australian Northern Territory Tourism Award for Excellence for its Halley’s Comet watch-site at Ayers Rock.

The award follows hard on the heels of Tourplan Pacific’s win of the 1986 Air New Zealand Tourism Marketing Award for a similar Halley's Comet watch-site at Omarama. The company offered the only technically equipped and staffed watch-site in Australia capable of catering for hundreds of people each night. . More than 3000 people visited the site over a sixweek period and more than half of these visitors were North Americans drawn to the Southern hemisphere largely to view and photograph Halley’s Comet. Tourplan Pacific’s submission is now a contender for the Australian National Tourism Awards which will soon be announced.
