Defence
Sir, —What are we going to use for defence if threatened by some, as yet unidentified, future nuclear-armed Gadaffi or Khomeiny? The only known defence is to threaten back. How can you without similar weapons? The only alternative is surrender. I appeared before the Defence Committee of Inquiry, presenting detailed and carefully reasoned submissions and expressed alarm that their report would be based on the numbers supporting various ideas. I cited the “Top Twenty” hits, where popularity today gives no proof of merit or
endurance. An assurance was given that they were commissioned to make recommendations based on the quality and validity of submissions received. A public opinion poll could have been conducted in the first place, costing a fraction of the committee’s expenses. — Yours, etc., AUSTEN B. WARD, Nelson. August 25, 1986.
