Agricultural reforms advocated
NZPA staff correspondent Cairns The farming industry in other countries should undergo the same kind of restructuring as is happening in New Zealand, said the president of Federated Farmers, Mr Peter Elworthy, in Cairns. He was speaking during the Ministerial meeting of Fair Traders in Agriculture, a meeting also attended by the Minister of Overseas Trade, Mr Moore. “In New Zealand we are being subjected by Mr Moore and his colleagues to major structural change,” said Mr Elworthy. “So we look to other countries for similar reform programmes.” Mr Elworthy said that, as protectionism in the United States and the European Community had increased, so had New Zealand farmers’ incomes dropped. “They have plummeted,” he said.
