Automation
Sir, —What has automation done for the world? It only means more modern machinery to produce goods faster with less labour. Nobody stops to think what over-production achieves — bigger stockpiles — but who cares as long as the almighty dollar- comes in? It is only a matter of time when production will have to cease for some time to allow the consumer to catch up to square one. The farmers found out the hard way that over-production does not pay. The biscuit firms have machinery to produce goods untouched by hand — a good thing for dole queues — and so it goes on. — Yours, etc.,
W. PALMER. August 20, 1986.
