Nuclear stance
Sir, —Six months ago we spent more than six weeks travelling more than 3000 miles around your beautiful country, with its .warm, friendly and insightful We have travelled in
six other Western Pacific countries, six European countries, plus the Soviet Union and North America, but nowhere have we found a preponderance of people with the wisdom of New Zealanders. For example, Christmas in New Zealand was not as crassly commercialised as we see it in the United States, and materialism seemed less deadly to the human spirit than in many other countries we have been through. Further, harmonious race relations, ’ though not perfected, appeared to be an actively sought-after goal. Lastly, and most notably your nation has had the foresight to say “no” to nuclear power and the great courage to say “no” to nuclear weapons. Three cheers to the most sensible land we know. — Yours, etc., DONALD and MARION LATHROP, Canaan, New York. August 6, 1986.
