Snooker to Meredith
Dave Meredith added yet another Canterbury open snooker title to his string of successes when he beat Perry Lilii, 3-2, in the final last evening. On his way to the final, Meredith achieved the championship’s highest break, 83, in his quarter-final against Bruce Anderson. It was
Anderson who had established the top mark, 81, in
section play. The championship was not without its surprises. The New Zealand champion, Peter de Groot, bowed out in the quarter-finals, beaten by therexperienced cueist, Brian Kirjcness.
The South Island champion, Stan Maffey, fared worst; he did not qualify from section play. Lilii did well to edge out Roy Young, of Otago, in his semi-final. Young will represent New Zealand at the world championships later this year in Invercargill. Results.—
Quarter-finals: B. Kirkness beat P. de Groot, 3-2; D.
Meredith beat B. Anderson. 32; P. Lilii beat R. Wilson (Otago), 3-2; R. Young (Otago) beat B. Jones, 3-2. Semi-finals: Meredith beat Kirkness. 3-1; Lilii beat Young. 3-2. Final: Meredßh beat Lilii, 3-2.
