Electoral law change attacked

PA Wellington Proposed changes to electoral law were being promoted for the Labour Party’s advantage and would open the system up to greater voting irregularity, said the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger. “I hope that the public would express their opposition to that potential gerrymandering of the electoral process,” he said.

Mr Bolger was commenting on the fourth interim report to Parliament last week of the Select Committee on Electoral Law.

The committee, by majority vote, recommended changing the special votes system to allow these to be cast up

to three weeks before polling day. Mr Bolger told a press conference that there was no justification for the change. “It is not a question of democratic voting. The Labour Party sees political advantage in the change and is going to try to force it through.”

The record showed one should be alert to past practices which had been shown up in the courts, Mr Bolger said. “The reality is that not everyone out there in the election campaigns runs quite in the straight with the rules as each and every one of us in this room would like. All I can say is what the record shows.”
