Mayor censured for S.A. visit

NZPA-Reuter Sydney Sydney’s city fathers have censured the Lord Mayor for visiting South Africa.

The City Council condemned Aiderman Doug Sutherland’s trip to Johannesburg’s centennial celebrations as unnecessary, inappropriate, and harmful to the international campaign against apartheld.

The Left-wing Mr Sutherland told the meeting he was against apartheid and had openly condemned it during his visit from July 7 to 13. He said he met several black leaders and visited Soweto and African areas in Cape

Town and Durban. The council criticised him for making the visit without advising it. Eight of the 24 councillors walked out but the rest voted for the censure motion. A spokesman for his office said Mr Sutherland had gone because Johannesburg City Council was controlled by the Opposition Progressive Federal Party, which was strongly anti-apartheid.

The council also decided to confer the freedom of Sydney on the jailed South African black leader, Nelson Mandela, but did not decide how to extend the invitation.
