Italy’s World Cup squad of ’82 on libel charges
NZPA-Reuter Rome Nine members of Italy’s 1982 World Cup winning squad were ordered, yesterday to answer libel allegations in court in November over remarks arising from the World Cup soccer finals in Spain, judicial sources said.
The players are among 19 people being sued for libel over comments in the press about journalists who had alleged, in an article in 1984, that Italian players paid
opponents from Cameroun to fix a match in the run-up to the World Cup. The players denied the allegations, and investigations by Italian magistrates and the International Football Federation (F.1.F.A.) were closed in 1984 for lack of evidence. The sources said the libel case, brought by the journalists, Roberto Chiodi and Oliviero Beha, would be heard on November 21 in Rome.
Among those being sued are the leading scorer, Paolo Rossi, the forward, Alessan-
dro Altobelli, the defender, Antonio Cabrini,- the former Cameroun >team .coach, Mr Jean Vincent, and Carlo de Gaudio, then a member ot the ruling body of the Italian Football Federation. Several Italian sports writers are also being sued.
Last week the country’s entire 1982 World Cup squad was sent for trial on charges of breaking Italian currency regulations by failing to convert a $NZ26,800 payment each from a sponsor into Italian lire.
