F.O.L. may organise protest
PA Wellington The possibility that the Federation of Labour will organise mass public protests against the Government's decision to privatise the Bank of New Zealand has been raised by a trade unionist, Mr Pat Kelly. Mr Kelly, the Wellington Trades Council president, said he expected the issue to be discussed at next week’s F.O.L. national council two-day meeting.
He said that while the Government had "conned” the public over the BNZ share issue, it was still not too late to have the policy reversed.
Asked how this could be achieved, he said, . "By arousing public concern.” Mr Kelly said the trade union movement had succeeded in defeating National Government policies on prescription charges and youth rates and there was no reason the F.O.L. could not do the same on the BNZ shares sale.
