Drop of 16 p.c. in new apprenticeships
PA Wellington The Labour Department has recorded a drop of almost 16 per cent in the number of new apprenticeships registered in the three months to the end of June.
Provisional quarterly figures show 1983 new apprenticeships compared with 2352 for the same period last year. The Minister of Employment, Mr Burke, said the figures were encouraging, considering the June, 1985, apprentice intake was exceptionally high in spite of the gen-
eral decline in the economy. “I fully expected a bigger drop and that there wasn’t, shows that employers are maintaining their confidence in the Government’s economic
policies,” Mr Burke said. Trades with the highest number of new apprenticeships during the June, 1986, quarter were: Carpentry 256, motor 243, women’s hairdressing 234, engineering 206, coachbuilding 156, electrical 147, plumbing and gas fitting 95, furniture 82 and retail meat 72;
