Samoan services at Mormon chapel

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will begin Samoan services at its Avonslde chapel on August 17.

Between 100 and 200 people are expected to take part in the meetings, which were organised because many Samoans found it hard to understand English when they arrived in New Zealand, said the president of the Church’s Christchurch stake, Professor David Mclntyre.

The meetings would be open to all Samoans living in Christchurch, not just those in the Avonside ward’s boundaries, he said. The Church has also

disbanded its Fendalton ward, but expanded its Opawa branch into a full ward. The new boundaries, which will take ef-

fect from August 17, will divide Christchurch into quarters centred on Cathedral Square. Mr Mclntyre said the Fendalton ward had covered the central city area where few members lived. Those who did tended to live in flats and were a transient population.

About 1800 church members live in the Christchurch stake. A stake is similar to a diocese in other churches, and a ward is similar to a parish.
