Armed man avoids tear-gas fumes

PA Auckland A man armed with a .22 calibre rifle who yesterday held at bay an Auckland armed offenders squad avoided tear-gas fumes by ripping up floor boards from a Warkworth farmhouse and gasping fresh air from the basement

The police said that the ploy, which had the squad rushing for extra tear-gas canisters, backfired. While tearing up the boards the man dropped his rifle into the base-

ment. At dusk the squad forced its way into the house and arrested the man, aged 42. The police said that the incident began about noon when a Warkworth farmer went to check his house in Twin Stream Road which was for sale. On arrival he noticed two bullet holes in windows.

He went to the Warkworth police station.

The farmer returned with a constable and was confronted at the back

door by a man with a rifle who told them to “clear off.”

The pair retreated and the armed offenders squad was alerted. Efforts throughout the afternoon to try to talk the man into giving himself up proved fruitless. Chief Inspector John Perring, who led the police, said the man had fired two shots, but no-one was hurt.

A man will appear in the District Court at North Shore to face a variety of charges.
