Entwistle unstoppable
After breaking through in the semi-finals, Karl Entwistle comfortably accounted for John Richards jn the final of the Canterbury A grade table tennis championship at the week-end.
Entwistle, the South Island under 18 singles champion, had a tremendous contest against Ling Nan Ming, the top seed, in their semi-final, all three games being decided by the bare two points. Richards showed improved form ’to thrash the Canterbury open and residential champion, John Armstrong, in the other semi-final.
However, it was Richard’s turn to be on the receiving end of a straight games hiding when the two young Avonside players met in the final.
The A grade doubles brought a series of surprises before Ling Nan Ming and the A reserve grade player, Ross Oakley, prevailed in the final over the University pair, John G. Armstrong and Michael Prisk. Avonside had more success
in the A reserve grade, Glenn Haszard winning- the singles then combining with Jeff Mason to take the doubles. Results.—

B grade.— Singles (final): C. Brading (Avonside) beat N. Gyde (Avonside), 21-11, 2117. Doubles (final): M. and T. Johnston (Parklands) beat B. Gloistein and F. Chalk (Avonside), 21-17, 21-15. Wednesday B grade.— Singles (final): B. Canton (Avonside) beat A. Sandford
(Avonside), 18-21, 21-15, 2114. Doubles (final): Gyde and Canton beat Gloistein and S. Wheeler (Avonside), 21-15, 21-13.
C grade.— Singles (final): D. Prisk (Landsdowne) beat M. Wilson (Avonside), 21-15, 21-18. Doubles (final): K. Watson and M. Wilson (Avonside) beat J. Gurr and R. Batchelor (Avonside), 15-21, 21-19, 21-18. D. grade.— Singles (final): D. Faass (Linwood) beat D. Penman (Avonside), 21-10, 10-21, 21-8. Doubles (final): P. White and W. Howie (Avonside) beat Faass and D. Robinson (Linwood), 21-7, 2119.
E grade.— Singles (final): J. Button (Avonside) beat C. Wall (Avonside), 21-16, 21-15. Doubles (final): C. Hintz and P. White (Avonside) beat G. and C. Wall (Avonside), 20-22, 21-16, 21-9.
