Sacred Heart triumphs
Sacred Heart Old Girls beat the Timaru side, College Old Girls, 83-58, in a Swiss Maid challenge netball match at the South Hagley courts on Saturday. Sacred Heart began strongly and attacked from the first pass. This aggressive start enabled it to take an eleven-goal lead by the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was more even. College Old Girls tightened their defence and their guarding was better. The wing-defence, Judy Reid, and the goal-defence, Louise Rollison, read the flight of the ball well and intercepted cleverly.
Both teams scored 16 goals in this quarter. The third quarter was equally hard-fought, but in spite of College Old Girls’ vast improvement, Sacred Heart absorbed the pressure. It was. helped in this respect by some skilful marking by Diana Houghton and Stephanie Stokes-Washington missed only a handful of goals from this point. In the last spell College Old Girls lost some of their effectiveness, and fundamental mistakes crept into their play. This allowed Sacred Heart to surge ahead again and it added 24 goals to College’s 11.
