Burnside dominates clash

Burnside finished the New Zealand Permanent Building Society’s senior women’s hockey competition on a high note, when it beat an archrival, Carlton, 2-0, on Saturday and finished six points clear.

Third place in the competition went to Woolston, even though it lost, 0-1, to Selwyn. Selwyn’s win allowed it to clinch fourth place.

In the battle for the minor plaings, Pegasus Wormaid beat Bumside 11, 4-0, while Harewood scrambled to a 3-2 win over a determined Hornby team. Burnside II and Hornby met yesterday in a deferred game, Bumside winning four goals to two.

BURNSIDE I 2 (K. Doig, D. Earnshaw), CARLTON 0.

Bumside dominated for much of the ‘‘top of the table” clash and ran out a comfortable winner with two first half goals. Judy Phillips was in outstanding form. She baffled and dazed a slow and ponderous Carlton defence. She had strong allies in Jane Earnshaw on the left wing and Kieran Doig in the midfield. In the second half Carlton fought back but never enlarged Bumside’s goal.

For Carlton Lesley Murdoch made many fine saves in goal while Henrietta Carroll worked industriously in the midfield.

SELWYN 1 (F. Gardiner), WOOLSTON 0.

A more determined Selwyn team managed to hang on to its early first .half goal, to beat the third-placed Woolston, at Nunweek Park. The win enabled Selwyn to claim fourth place from Harewood on goal difference. Selwyn started the game positively, attacking mainly down its right flank through Trish Harte and Jackie Nuthall. Barb Mitchell and Felicity Gardiner also featured in the attack, making space for themselves and being strong on the ball. It was Gardiner who was on hand to slot in an early goal for Selwyn, after play had broken down from a penalty comer. Selwyn completely dominated the first half and it was to Woolston’s credit that the score was kept to 1-0, Sharon Steven, in goal, making some fine saves.

Taking time to settle, because of the absence of three New Zealand players in Amsterdam, Woolston finally found its feet and in the second half came right back at Selwyn. Tracy Snelling in the midfield tackled and passed well to set up her forwards, where Janet Sperry and Sue Duggan spearheaded the attack.

Selwyn’s defence remained solid. Rose Gardiner once again being prominent, to deny Woolston the chance to score.

PEGASUS WORMALD 4 (G. Richards 2, R. Seeley, V. Cowles), BURNSIDE II 0.

Perhaps spurred on by the thought that a loss to Burnside II would leave it seventh in the competition, Pegasus turned on its best display of the season to soundly beat the young Burnside II team. Tthe Pegasus forwards combined well together, Jillian Smith featuring with her good distribution of the bail to set up her other forwards. From one such pass, Ginny Richards was on hand to score for Pegasus and give it a one-nil lead at half time.

In the second half Pegasus continued its improved performance with Richards adding another goal, Vivienne Cowles and Rachel Seeley also getting one each. Burnside 11, after a con-

vincing win over Hornby the previous week-end, had no answer, the dangerous Sharon

Bell being marched out of the game. LIQUORLAND HAREWOOD 3 (N. Headifen, L. Sutherland, L. Shultz), HORNBY 2 (G. Musson 2). In an uninspiring and scrappy game played at Warren Park, Harewood managed to save itself some grace by pulling back from 22, to win 3-2. Harewood, 2-1 up at halftime, was surprised to be pegged back, and only a nice goal from Lisa Sutherland

late in the game saved it from dropping two points. The game was marred by constant stick hacking and body checking which was allowed to continue throughout the game by the umpires.
