Five-wicket haul boosts Allott’s case
NZPA-Reuter London The fast bowler, Paul Allott, strengthened his claim for a recall to the England team by taking five for 55 as Lancashire bowled Warwickshire out for 138 in the English County Cricket Championship yesterday. On a day when England’s fast bowlers struggled against New Zealand in the opening test match, Allott and Yorkshire’s Peter Hartley both produced impressive pace bowling performances.
Allott took his wickets off 21.3 overs at Edgbaston, after Warwickshire had won the toss. Hartley returned career-best figures of six for 86 at Sheffield, where Yorkshire dismissed Nottinghamshire for 191. Allott was well supported by his fellowseamers, Tony Murphy, (two for 29), and Mike Watkinson (three for 48), as Warwickshire floundered on an uneven pitch. Lancashire replied with 183 for five, the former West Indian test captain, Clive Lloyd, making 72 not out.
Hartley also took advantage of an unpredictable pitch at Sheffield, where his control and
stamina enabled him to capture the prized wickets of the openers, Tim Robinson and Chris Broad, and then work his way through the rest of the order. In reply, however, Yorkshire also struggled to reach 114 for six at the close.
At Northampton: Middlesex 216 in 90 overs (A. Miller 92), Northamptonshire 54/2 after 17 overs.
At Abergavenny: Glamorgan 168 in 63.5 overs (Younis Ahmed 46), Derbyshire 143/7 after 45 overs (K. Barnett 84 n. 0.). At Worcester: Gloucestershire 300/9 decl. in 95.1 overs (J. Lloyds 82, K. Tomlins 75, M. Alleyne 73 n. 0., A. Pridgeon 4/60), Worcestershire 38/2 after 11 overs. At Sheffield: Nottinghamshire 191 in 68.3 overs (C. Rice 47, M. Newell 47, P. Hartley 6/ 68), Yorkshire 114/6 after 41 overs (J. Love 40 n. 0.).
At Guildford: Sussex 294 in 97.3 overs (Imran Khan 55, I. Gould 54, N 1 Lenham 41, S. Clarke 4/60), Surrey 15 without loss after nine overs.
At Edgbaston: Warwickshire 138 in 50.3 overs (A. Ferreira 69 n. 0., P. Allott 5/55), Lancashire 183/5 after 56 overs (G. Fowler 76, C. Lloyd 72 n. 0.).
