Invitation declined
NZPA-AFP Edinburgh The English Amateur Boxing Association (A.8.A.) has turned down an invitation to take part in an international tournament in Nigeria later this year.
The A.B.A. rejected the request in protest at the Nigerians’ boycott of the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games.
“We just could not believe what we were reading,” said the A.B.A. secretary, Clive Howe. “The invitation came to
us two days after Nigeria had withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games. “It would have been difficult to fit in the competition, but we would not attempt it after their deck sion to stay away from here.
“The boxers wanted to be here, but politicians have again interfered and won the day. We are not a politically minded body, but if we went to Nigeria, it would only satisfy their Government” he said.
